Home > For parents > My child needs extra support
Is your child struggling to keep up at school? Is he unhappy? Or is the teacher struggling to guide your child? If so, the school will work with you as a parent to see what steps can be taken. We want all pupils to develop to their full potential. That is why schools work on good support in an action-oriented way. This means that they work with a clear plan to achieve goals. They look carefully at what a pupil needs. And at what the pupil can do.
Usually, the teacher provides support herself. For example, the teacher then takes the time to give a pupil extra explanation. Or the teacher adapts the pupil's lesson material so that it suits him better. Want to know what basic support the school offers? Then take a look at the school support profile in the school guide.
When more is needed, then the school can use the resources for extra support. This is done in consultation with you. Sometimes the school can provide guidance to your child in school. Soms extra help is needed from outside the school. This support is deployed in consultation with the parents. As much as possible at the child's school. The agreements and goals that are worked on are recorded in a plan. This is called the development perspective genoamed.
For pupils living in Amsterdam or Weesp, we assess (on behalf of the municipality of Amsterdam), as gatekeeper dyslexia, whether a pupil is eligible for compensated diagnostics.
Together with the teacher and internal supervisor, discussekt you what support your child needs. You make agreements about this. The school draws up a development perspective on this basis. What you can expect from school in this respect can be found in the 'School support profile'. This can be found on the school's website: either as a separate document, or incorporated into the school guide. Please contact the school if you cannot find this document.
The development perspective describes what the pupil can do now and what expected that the student can and knows when leaving school. Thus, the learning line and expected development line for everyone clear. The plan will in any case include: your child's educational goals, which subject matter is offered, the way in which your child is supported and managed and the expected attainment level.
The extra guidance is usually for a certain period of time. The aim is that after this, the school will be better able to deal with the request for help. And that the pupil can participate in education without extra support.
You may of course bring someone you know well to the interview. But the parent and child advisor can also help you with this. You can ask the school's internal supervisor for the contact details of the parent and child advisor. Some schools have this contact information on their website.

The school board where your child under, receives funding from our partnership to provide additional support. Each school board has made different arrangements on this. Usually, the school money apply to the school board; sometimes the school has already received this money. With this money, someone from the school or another organisation hired om your child for a certain period of time for a number of hours a week.
A parent and child advisor is attached to each school. The parent and child advisor thinks with you and can advise on the use of assistance.
