Does your child need extra support at school? Then the school where your child was first registered in writing has a duty of care. This means that the school must investigate whether it can offer your child appropriate education. The duty of care applies to both regular and special (primary) education.
To investigate whether the school can provide appropriate education for your child, it will request information from you.
The school has six weeks for this examination. This period may be extended once by four weeks. Please mind, during this examination period the school does not yet have to place your child.
School's investigation can have three outcomes:
In the Duty of care guide you can read more in detail about how it is organised.
The school (the school board) has a duty of care. The intention is that the school, together with you and your child, looks at the possibilities of extra support within the school or school board. If it appears that the school thinks your child would be better suited to special (primary) education, the school can, together with you, request an admission statement (TLV for short) from the partnership.
In practice, children are best served by providing the important preliminary information and good consultation between school and parents. When you register your child at a school, it is important that you provide any information that may indicate an additional support need. This will allow the school to work with you to better and more quickly determine what your child needs.
You should then contact the school board. You can then contact our point of contact for absentees, Tamara Dekker (t.dekker@swvamsterdamdiemen.nl). She can explain the duty of care and what it means for the school and for your child. If your child is at home, it is best to contact the school attendance officer of your municipality.
SWV PO Amsterdam Diemen will not be accessible from Wednesday 16 July 2025 to Friday 15 August 2025. You can call us again on Monday 18 August from 9:00. Have a nice holiday!
