Home > For parents > My child has dyslexia
Children with dyslexia have great difficulty learning to read and/or write. The problems are so bad that extra counselling does not help enough. For severe dyslexia, your child may receive special care.
For children in Amsterdam and Weesp, we assess (on behalf of the municipality of Amsterdam) whether a pupil is eligible for reimbursed diagnosis of Severe Dyslexia (ED). We do this according to the criteria of the NKD. If it student file meets these criteria, you as a parent can register your child with a dyslexia care provider. This will determine after the diagnosis whether treatment is needed.
You can't do that yourself. Only the school can apply for a pupil. The school sends the application (student file) for reimbursed diagnostics of severe dyslexia to us.
We look at it student file to see if a pupil is eligible for reimbursed examinations for Severe Dyslexia (ED). We do this according to the rules of the Dutch Dyslexia Quality Institute (NKD).
The school registers a student and sends the file for reimbursed ED examinations to us. We review the file and check that it contains all the necessary information.
Once we have received all the information, we assess the student's eligibility for reimbursed examinations. No later than 10 weeks after receiving a complete file, the school will receive approval (or rejection) for reimbursed examinations.
If the school receives an approval, the school notifies the parents. The parents can register the pupil directly for investigations with a dyslexia care provider contracted by the municipality. For this, they will need the approval letter and file, which the school has received from us.
If any information is missing, we will let the school know by e-mail. The school will then not receive approval for reimbursed examinations for the time being. The school discusses this with the parents and, together with someone from the school board, can complete the file. Once the file is complete, the school can reapply to us.
The school receives a letter explaining why the file does not meet the criteria. The school then discusses this with you as a parent. Together, you look at what the next step could be. Sometimes the school board is involved.
The school is responsible for compiling the file for the application. Before the application is submitted, support in reading and/or writing must have been provided. Without this support, the application cannot be made.
At this handbook describes the requirements for the help provided at school. An overview of all the information that must be included in the pupil file for an application can be found in this checklist.
As a parent, you can register your child for this. For this, the letter of agreement from the gatekeeper and the student file of school needed.
